It is always a problem going to and from a water butt or tap, so what I have done is placed small water butts round which means a lot less carrying of the watering can.
I have 4 in all, 2 Victorian dolly tubs on the left of the garden, a plastic dustbin on the right ,and a tall slim one by the greenhouse.
They are all strategically placed, hardly visible.
I prefer to use rainwater wherever possible but I fill them up using a hose.

I have 4 as well, in a garden 16' wide by 170' long, and all uphill. I haven't run out of rainwater this year, but I would like to get a system going for pumping water to a larger container at the top of the garden during winter, so that I could water the garden by gravity, for instance with a porous hose, in summer.
