I've got some roots of Waterlilly "Attraction" that I'm trying to get rid of. I've been looking at freecycle but the website appears to be not working correctly? Any way I want to get rid of them, but postage is starting to add up on the plants I've sent out already this spring, so I want to do it without it costing me anything. Any one near Maidstone that wants a waterlilly? Seems a shame to just bin them when you can pay £15 for a tiny cutting at a garden centre.
Pete why don't you ask people to send you the price of the postage. You mentioned problems with a website. I've been looking around this afternoon and I think the problem is internet based. I've had problems with a few sites.
Well I would ask for postage but I think I got a bit of a frosty reception when I mentioned it in the exotic seed thread. Kind of, lets swap. Swapping is OK if someone has what you want, (unlikely), so you just take what they have available? Its not my way, I'd like to be able to send plants on to people that want them, I want nothing in return, just not to be out of pocket.
No you dont need a pump Nick. But you do need at the very least a couple of feet of water, more would be better Just a quick note, its best not to put your adress up in the open forum, delete it and send me a private message.
Good grief some people are so tight, this is what we do on our local grapevine it's so easy Pete... Find out how much to post & then tell us lot to send you an SAE to that value.. Then all you have to do is attach their envelope to the package & send it back.... Simples..!

I most certainly Do Not think you are being tight at all... Package one up & take it to the post office & get it weighed.. Then that is how much everyone pays... Their postage only..!!!! :WINK1: What we do on our grapevine is we put the said plant into a video box or the like & then into a jiffy bag & post them that way & they do not get damaged.. The old video boxes weigh next to nothing nor the jiffy bag & we usually pay about £2-£3 in postage,,, usually... Darned cheap if you ask me for a plant...
Ok Marley thanks, got the wrong end of the stick there for a moment Most of what I've been sending out is around the £3 mark, not sure any would have fitted into a video box though. Been using cardboard to make up boxes, lined with bubble wrap.
No I don't suppose it would fit in a vid box in your case but you get what I am saying, we are usually sending cuttings & seedlings of more tender type plants.. Toms recently.. Their stamped addressed envelope is the postage address label on the jiffy bag or box back to them.!
Just read the post Pete. I have just finished making my pond bigger a concrete and glass fibre construction. 3 ft deepest to 10" shallow area. Surface 6M2. Do you have any spare and would they be too big for my pond. I will happily pay postage.
Missed the earlier discussion ... I resent asking people for SAE 'cos they just wind up paying the postage twice, and sponsoring the GPO ... I think the answer would be for them to EMail me an E-Stamp (the sort of barcode things you can buy online) ... but ... they have to be used within 48 hour or something like that, and there is heaps to go wrong depending on the technical prowess of the person. PayPal'ing you the money is another route, but PayPal pocket 3.5% or somesuch, so you'd have to be able to work out exactly how much and add it on (although when you send money with PayPal the Sender can choose to pay the fee ... but you have to choose the right route, choose business and there is no charge, choose personal and there is a charge and the option for Sender to pay, or not. I don't suppose the "Business" route is fee-free ... so no idea what happens - my point is that even trying to send money via PayPal a) incurrs a fee and b) is not straight forward) I think PayPal would be preferable to having to pay the price of a stamp to send you a stamp though ... I have absolutely no difficult with paying your postage AND packaging costs, I just resent paying the GPO in order to send you the stamp for you to send me the goods!
