After a harsh and varied weather, my lawn has patches of mud and other areas moss.

I suggest taking the grass off, and putting some stones down and sand on top, then soil, then roll new grass on top. This idea is for draining the rain water away. Do you know if this has been done before, and will it work?

Sounds ok to me but you could also dig a few drainage holes first and fill with pebbles to start with.

My brother had part of his lawn treated in a similar way as you suggest @Seafigicecoffee, but including some trenches as it was really bad. It is now the envy of his neighbours .
