This odd weather we are having is confusing my garden and worrying me a little as to the effect it will have on next springs flowers.

I planted my bulbs as instructed even a little late as the weather was mild. Now I have petunias and geranium still in flower and beside them a group of narcissus about to come into flower , these are bulbs I planted only five weeks ago. The allium have all come up, except the gigantium, and the anenome de caen ( name might be mispelt lol) have also come up. I am afraid if the harsh winter they predicted arrives I will lose these plants. Any one else got concerns or do people more experienced than I think will they tuff it out ???

I have today seen an Elder tree in full green leaf and flowering; in a sheltered position maybe, but they should leafless and have had berries at this time of year.

I have also got a couple of clumps of snowdrops through!!

I have also seen a number of Contoneaster in flower as well as being covered in berries??

It's all going "nuts", unfortunately if the winter does arrive as suddenly as it did last year a lot of plants are going to get caught out, what long term damage it will cause depends on the species I guess. Last winter saw off 99% of the Cordylines in our neighbourhood.

    Hey Mrs C,

You'll need some protections on things that have come up too soon. The Alliums should be ok as they seem to have some sort of antifreeze for blood, not sure about the rest as i'm wild flower & veg department.

I agree entirely..one day fog, one day sun and the plants don't know how to behave. The best thing to do I would think it is to grow plants in small proportions so to monitor their behaviour.

one of the ceanothus concha I planted a few months ago is forming flower buds?

thought they only flower in mid summer?

perhaps it's because I planted it recent? (3 months ago)

I have a ceanothus hedge that's about 7 or 8 years old; normally flowers in spring/early summer and that's flowering, whilst not covered it has got a fair few

I didn't think I would be the only one whose garden is confused.

Today I found tomato seedlings where I had pulled up the plants after they had finished there work. I know these wont survive and am hoping a lot of the annual WEED seedings that have germinated and are rampantly growing will also succumb to the winter (if it arrives) less work in the spring :).

My 3500 gladis are out of the ground and safe and I have just replaced them with tulip bulbs. Being my first full year growing flowers for cutting on a large scale I have spent a loy of money on bulbs, it would be a disaster financially if the weird weather ruined them. Covering with fleece is ok for a small patch but we're talking an area the size of two allotments here . Thats a lot of fleece lol.

      Oh the joys of gardening:heehee:

The trouble is that when a frost comes any tender shoots are going to get burnt and that could cause rot or worse.:sunny::what:

I still have pelargoniums flowering in my borders - and very nice & bright they look too. As soon as I hear a forecast for frost in my particular area (not the county in general), I will bring them into the greenhouse. I've never had pels in the borders this late before.
