    Hello people.
I've decided that I need to build a website to host my photographs and music with hope that I can get a larger audience and hopefully get some of my work published.
I have just started to research into hosting/building and am looking at 'Go Daddy' and '1&1' as advertised on the telly box thing.
My music productions have always been under the name of 'Advantura' which was the model of my first campervan. I'm thinking of using Advantura media as my domain name or something similar to encompass both photos and music in one place.

Does anybody have experience of making your own site and do you think I'm approaching this in the right manner?
    All comments and advice welcome.
    Thanks in advance,
    Russ

      Good evening, Russ

I'm thinking that, in the initial stages, you need to get your self and your "products" (music/photography) *out there*; self promotion is a challenge but very do-able. Before you incur the costs of web design/hosting, I would imagine that it would be faster (and cheaper) to harness the powers of social media: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook etc.
Use those portals to unleash yourself, and your talents, first and foremost. See how much interest it generates. Then, behind the scenes, you can be thinking of where you could harness self promotion via a website.

I wish you the very best of British in your endeavours

The first thing I would suggest is to do a quick domain name search - if the domain name you want isn't taken, then they are (generally) quite cheap to buy; there is no harm in buying the domain name first, and then you can sit on it and build your site at your leisure.

I'm afraid I have no experience of hosts, but I expect that they are most likely going to be in the same vein as mobile phone or cable providers - all very similar in terms of performance and price, its just a case of choosing the features you want.

There is also a host of tools out there that make web design much easier than it used to be - the hard bit, I think, is finding which one suits you best.

Have you thought about asking on the Digital Spy forums, as they are media focussed?

Hi Rustler, you can use a website as a "business card" maybe....but as far as making yourself known, nowadays, social media rules...Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, Linkedin...(but needless to say if the product is not good nothing can make it work).
But where are examples of your work? You would be convincing as a "The Milk Carton Kids - Honey, Honey" kind of guy, if that is you in the avatar....

I agree with @fat controller , get your domain first.

I set up my website 15 years ago using an app from Yahoo/Abaca. Totally DIY as I have no intentions of selling to anyone more than 10 kilometers from me. I use mine as an online portfolio but do get the odd "hit" for new business.

@Zigs has a web presence too. Maybe he can help?
