Hi folks, I have an area of garden which has daffodils and other springy type things beginning to shoot up.
However, there is also unwanted grass growing around them too. Is there a type of weed killer that will be selective and kill off the rogue grass but allow the other things to live?

It probably would for me too but the minor problem of having three young nippers and working 70 hours a week means that 'man hours' are limited and a wonder product would be most welcome

Unfortunately, NT, there is no product available that will do the job you want when it's around other susceptible plants. It's probably Couch Grass that is giving you the problem and it's just a case of digging or pulling it out whenever you get the chance. It's also one of the "pests" who's long stems of roots travel underground and you can end up digging up a foot or more of it.........and should you leave a tiny bit in the ground it will grow back, so it's a continual job done whenever you're not working and feel the inclination to do so but once on top of it it's easier to keep under control.:coffee::snork:

Thanks folks, it's funny isn't it that when you want to grow grass, I.e. On your lawn, there's always something causing a bald patch but where you don't want it to grow..........woooosh..........it grows in abundance!!!!! Lol

I strim the area where bulbs are in late July-ish - the bulbs have died down by then, that gets rid of all the rubbish that grows up ... and then I spray with Glyphosate in September which kills anything that comes back. Usually lots of annual weeds come up, with the bulbs, in spring though.

P.S. If they are naturalised in grass I think its worth spraying the grass, late in the season, with a selective weedkiller so that you don't get a crop of buttercups flowering and competing with the Daffs when they flower

:)Hi newtoitall, Unfortunately there isn't a product that selective, but if the problem is couch grass you might be able to tackle it as follows: carefully loosen the soil, gather as many healthy strands of grass as possible into a bundle, without breaking the stems. Bury a jam-jar or plastic container to 2/3rds it's depth, then half-fill with some diluted glyphosate. (Best to wear rubber gloves). Stuff the strands of grass into the jar and leave it for 4-6 weeks.
If there's a possibility of children or animals finding the jar, cover it with a bucket and either peg it down or put a heavy brick/stone on top. For a large infested area three or four jars can be buried. This method also works extremely well on bindweed in the middle of precious plants but use diluted 2,4D.
If what you've got amongst your daffs is annual meadow grass I'm afraid the only solution is hand-weeding! Good luck!

Sorry, didn't mean that to sound flippant or condescending, came out a bit wrong. I'm just a coward when it comes to using weedkillers near my plants and am lucky to have plenty of time to tackle weeding by hand.
