Hi, we've inherited a kind of patio. Not the greatest of designs, but it does the job! Main problem is grass and weeds growing up from inbetween the block paving. I know I should brush something in there, but not sure what. Is it just sand, but which sand? Thanks!

Hi sheppy, get rid of the weeds and then repoint with the following.

I usually wet the joints about an hour before brushing in a dry mixture of 3 parts soft sand to 1 part cement. I wouldn't recomended repointing with wet mortar as this can stain the pavers. The mixture will take up water and set by itself. If you want a good uniform finish to the pointing use a bit of hose pipe and run it along the joint to give a nice groove.

Other tips I would say are:

    1. You can stretch the ratio of sand to cement but the danger of that is it will deteriorate easier.

    2. If you are going to clean the patio with a jet washer do it before you repoint as jet washing will blast it out.

    Good luck.

You might also try Pathclear to get rid of the weeds.

I agree with Fran use a weedkiller first. One that will kill roots and all then repoint the joints as above.

I find one good way of getting rid of weeds in crevices such as on patio's is to pour on boiling water from out of the kettle, making sure it doesn't come into contact with plants though.

The weeds will come back, eventually from freshly dropped seed from birds or wind, but if you are going to repoint it, it should do the trick.

It works out a lot cheaper than weedkiller, and only cost's the price of water and electricity to boil the kettle.

    Hope this helps
