I thought I'd bore you all with this, seeing as I currently have nowt better to do for a few minutes:)

Because of the weather and family commitments I haven't had much chance to get into the countryside lately, and today withdrawal finally got the better of me so off I went in my car.

I decided to head out into the peak district. There is still some snow up on the hills but it has been thawing, leaving lots of surface water on the main road. I was taking it easy. On the straights I was at the speed limit so as to not hold up the BMW that was behind me, but because of the conditions I was taking some of the tighter bends at only 35 mph (speed limit is 50 on that road).

As I came out of one bend, I hit a lot of surface water right on the bend. The steering went funny and the back end of the car spun out a bit, but with some very quick but carefully controlled steering I managed to recover it ok. The BMW driver must have saw this and realised that the road was iffy in parts, but despite this he flew past at 70 or 80 at his first opportunity. I thought that was odd of him.

I turned off onto a quiet, lesser used road and there were still significant patches of ice and slush on it, so I kept my speed down to about 25mph (40 speed limit). Luckily the few other cars I saw on that road were being driven with great care, but as I went into a gradual bend, my car decided to go straight ahead onto the wrong side of the road, right into the path of an oncoming car. Fortunately I managed to recover it just in the nick of time, so that's two instances where I nearly lost it in one journey.

I eventually reach my destination, and get out to go for my walk. I know it has warmed up slightly but it is still cold in the hills, so imagine my surprise when I saw some bloke walking along, happy as larry, dressed in nothing but shorts. This was quite far from the car park as well so he hadn't just got out of his warm car.

Eventually I came home, and the great punchline is... I had a completely uneventful journey back.

How very strange, but in regards to shorts in all weathers, I've seen postman happily walking through snow in just shorts...... Brave people they are.

Ah, but posties are hardy creatures! We judge how cold it is by what our postman is wearing-it has to be below zero for him not to be in shorts.

"Have a nice day" takes on a whole new meaning when you have days like that...

I bet the posty was wearing footwear and some sort of top though. This bloke in the countryside wasn't.
