I was looking out our front window just now, waiting for the kids taxi to arrive to tak them to school and I saw what I thought was a male house sparrow, eating seed off the ground, below a feeder.

But when he turned round he had weird markings on his head, which promptes me to get a book out and look him up. It was a male Reed Bunting!! First one I have ever seen. I'm well chuffed :gnthb:

not my pic, just for educational purposes lol

Lovely photo Ros,{even though it isn't your own}We had a male Reed Bunting throughout the summer last year in our garden and I too thought it to be a sparrow but it definetly was a Reed Bunting. Then when we had the snow the other week we had him and his lady partner plus another pair feeding but we are not sure whether the other two were juveniles from their nest.

It just amazes me how these little birds with their very tiny brains can keep the knowledge of where I live in their heads and remember to come back to my garden again after all these months.:D

Glad you have seen one at long last.Me and my younger brothers used to see loads of them when we were kids as we had rivers and reed beds near to where we lived but where I live now there are no reed beds let alone a river:scratch::D

I saw his missus this avo :) maybe they'll be breeding nearby this year? I live opposite a farm just off a main road, about 4+ miles from any reeds, so either they've bred well and are spreading, or they're damn hungry!!
