This is Welney Wetland Trust in Cambridgeshire near Wisbech covering 1000 acres, the reserve plays host each winter to thousands of migratory swans and other wildfowl espesially Pochard ducks.

This is how it looked to-day,more like the north sea coast..

There were supposed to be many more swans on the water....but they prefered to forage in the nearby fields............

Thanks for the excellent photos, Roders. I used to go there often for the hoopers and bewicks. Somone told me that fewer swans came this year because of warmer winters in the Arctic

Lovely photo's Roders.Long time since we went to Welney. We often used to go to Minsmere as well which was nice, but it was difficult when we had the dog.We must go back there.Minsmere was where we saw our first Advocet,Bittern and Marsh Tit...

Nice photos. What are those hooped structures? Almost looks like someone has overwatered his polytunnel! :D

Geoff,I think they are where the birds are driven into for when they have to have rings fitted, and to be checked over to make sure everything is ok with them, but I am not 100% sure on that one.Someone may be along later who can help you with the answer [IMG]
