On my allotment, near a tree stump, its dry almost sandy, on the other side, its holds the water a lot more, when I put the spuds in on the weekend, is it best on the dry or wet side to plant them in?

If you plant your spudlets on a quantity of manure (well rotted) this will conserve the moisture in the dry area and allow excess moisture to drain away in the wet area. So get that manure in the trench first! Cheers, Tony.

If the soil is too dry, you wont get a good crop. What you do get will be delicious, but the yield will be disappointing, as spuds need lots of water to fill out.

If the soil is too wet, they will rot, and even if they don't, the slugs will find them and eat them.

Tony is right, but if you can't get any manure, I think I'd use the wetter soil, but dig it well and try to raise it a bit so that it drains better.

When I say wet, its not sodden, it will dry out, I guess in the winter it kinda collect it, and I think on the other side the tree roots drink it up, I have put loads of manure down, about 4 or 5 barrow loads (cant remember) but I did put a lot in, im lucky a farmer dumps it there for us
