A few days ago, I took the wife out for a meal. Ever since, she had chest pain that got steadily worse. When Gaviscon had no effect, I urged her to go to the NHS walk in thing. That was about 4PM today. I dropped her off then took the kids home, having told wife to phone me when she was ready to be picked up. She phoned me to tell me they wouldn't let her go. She'd mentioned when asked about family history that her dad had had angina. Now the thing is, I can understand why that would tick certain boxes, but what they didn't factor in was that her dad (the good man that he was and I'm not slating him), was a heavy smoker, excessive drinker, had a pretty bad diet, and took virtually no exercise. None of that mattered. There was a family history of heart trouble and that was all they needed to know. So she was taken by ambulance to the main hospitable. A sensible precaution of course, and I'm not knocking the NHS staff that made this judgement (better to be safe than sorry).

Wife was upset because she'd agreed to meet her sister, and to take all the kids trick or treating. That was now off obviously. So I took the kids to the sister in law, and off they went trick or treating without Mrs CL1. Afterwards, CL1.1 decided he wanted to sleep over at his cousins. Fine. So with my mam looking after CL1.2 and 1.1 at his auntie's, I went off to the hospital to see the wife.

I was there maybe 5 minutes when my phone rang. Seems 1.1 has the same cat allergy that I had when I was little. He very quickly became very poorly, so I had to go and get him out of there. He was no upset about his mam, upset about not being able to have a sleepover, and upset about feeling poorly. Poor kid. So I brought him home, to where my mam was already there, looking after 1.2. He very quickly felt better once he got home, thus (in my opinion) confirming that cat allergy theory, but he didn't get to bed until about midnight. Bad enough at the best of times for a 5 year old, but he has a test for his martial arts tomorrow morning first thing, so I have no idea what we'll do about that now.

The good news though is that wife is ok now. As I suspected (but was not qualified to confirm), she was not having heart trouble. It turns out she'd developed gastroenteritis, which I know is very painful, but thankfully not life threatening in most cases if picked up before it does secondary damage.

So we're all worn out now, but at least we're all back home and ok now.

As for 1.1's test tomorrow morning, I half expect he'll perform very poorly due to tiredness, if we get there at all. His real test isn't for 3 weeks but the point of tomorrow is for the instructor to see if he is ready to go before the panel. I guess I'll just have to explain the situation and see what the instructor says.

:grphg: What a trying day indeed!!!! :grphg:

So relieved Mrs Cl1 has the lesser of the two evils (although, as you say, gastroenteritis can be most uncomfortable) wishing her a speedy recovery.

As for cl1.1 - I think you underestimate the resilience of a youngster - my guess is that he will perform quite well enough tomorrow morning and will be a shining star in 3 weeks time for the real test. And if he should perform a little under par tomorrow ... that's not such a bad thing; all it means is it will throw up any weaker areas and he has 3 weeks to work on them :blue thumb:

What a blessing to have close family around you at times such as these!

Hope you all have a solid nights sleep and awake refreshed (and, for cl1.1 - raring to go!) Good luck tomorrow young 'un

Thanks all for the well wishes. Much appreciated.

Wife is much better today (and home). She's on a course of medication to calm her insides down.

CL1.1 made it to his pre-test. I was probably more nervous than he was, especially as it turns out you're not allowed in the hall unless you're either judging or being judged, so all I could do was sit outside and wait. But, I heard the bowing out ritual at the end, nervously waited for people to start coming out, and then out comes 1.1 with a form in his hand. The form is his application to do the real test, and they don't get handed out unless the instructors think you stand a good chance of passing it :)

Probably best that parents are kept out of the room - most likely helps the participants to concentrate more. You must have been chewing your fingernails wondering how he was getting on.
