What are these bad boys?

    I dug out a new patch for my sweetcorns this weekend - and I found these pair in the soil. They were squirming around quite close together, and I guess they were about an inch and a bit long. They had a "mouth" at one end, and when I held them, you could feel it kind of latching on.

    I wasn't sure if they were goodies or baddies, so I hurled them into a big piece of scrub land that's over the way from my garden. IMG_2817.JPG IMG_2817.JPG

    They are Leatherjackets the larvae of Daddy-Longlegs - they can be quite destructive eating the roots of your plants.

      I had no idea that something as flimsy as a daddy longlegs could start life as such a chubby kid! If I find them again then, I'll put them on the bird table.

        And it makes sense - I dug out a big chunk of grass to make room for the sweetcorn. :)
