The new year starts with a drop in temperature.
I just checked the tree fern and the crown is dry. We got frost in the morning hours but it will be colder in the coming night.

I've just chucked a handful of holly berries off the Xmas decs into the bottom of our front hedge where it's a bit gappy. Hoping one might seed itself,

Put some bubble wrap loosely around the nanas and dumped a lot of chippings around them also.
As long as I preserve the base of the stems I will be happy, I just dont like them going right back to relying on underground shoots in the spring for regrowth.

The first dry day of the year allowed me to finish off preparing the beds where I want to plant bare root raspberries, and I also planted some cyclamen for a splash of winter colour.

Really excited for this growing season - the garden is my main project for 2025.

Hard frost this morning didn't plan on doing anything but I've been quite busy this afternoon. Decided to cut back the ivy on the GH before it covers it , looks much better now. DSC_1041.JPG DSC_1042.JPG

While had the tripod ladders out I winter pruned the wisteria forgot to do the summer prune it had ventured to the top of the apple tree , while trying to unravel the wisteria I took a few cranker ridden branches off the apple tree .

Just been back out in the dark to give a salvia atrocyana a mulch , nearly broke my neck venturing back its already frozen over.

Moved a 2" diameter hawthorn 30 ft or so to replace the dead larch I had removed last autumn. Local planning person added that as a condition to allowing removal of the dead tree, apparently They thought the brick corner of my house might offend my neighbour on that side also it would increase the biodiversity of my garden.
Needless to say they had not moved from their cosy office, not even to fly a drone over the property. If they had done they would have noticed that the larch had no branches below eaves height and a number of self seeded hawthorns.
The ground bore more relation to bad porridge than anything else; hawthorn is now reduced to 10 to 12 ft tall and a lot narrower, hopefully it will take. Also a lot of the trimmings have been pushed into the ground as cuttings.

Not doing much outside today, but will sort through seed packets and sort into sowing times and conditions; mainly the non vegetable seeds. Anything that needs chilling will go into fridge after labeling.

Well it is a nice warm office and the tea won't drink itself... We had a good tree person in the council but I think he's gone now; getting anyone to site is quite difficult, getting anything courteous is downright unlikely!

I'm just looking at the garden that is completely frosted over but looks lovely in the bright sunshine. I shan't venture out there as walking on frosted ground is not good for the garden (that's my excuse, anyway :heehee:) and my tootsies get cold.

What a glorious gardening day yesterday was.
Sunny, mild, no rain, no howling gales.
I moved the lemon verbena and pomegranate into the conservatory before the big freeze starts down here. At last I planted my last daffodils, tulips and lilies.
It took me a couple of hours, and of course, looking out afterwards, you wouldn't know I had touched a thing!
We had a frost last night but nothing major. Today looks promising again. I might get another session in. I have some small pots ready to fill to sow my onion seed. Traditionally they are sown on Jan. 1st but I have missed that.
The winter flowering honeysuckle smelled wonderful yesterday in the sunshine.

Everything is still frozen but looking good.

All I have done is got to my local nursery and buy my first batch of compost. 6 x 70 litres of high peat compost. :blue thumb:

I've only been filling in my new 2025 seed calendar to remind me when to start each type of seed.

It's going to be the middle of February before we creep above freezing again. And then, only a few days. No nights above freezing until sometime in late April.
