Thought it might be interesting for other novices like me to hear what the pros are planting now for spring and summer 2015? I know I should be thinking about bulbs and biennials but not really sure where to start :)

The new seed catalogues are arriving daily as we speak, and next years spring bulbs are starting to appear in shops. I would start by looking at the different varieties you prefer, daffodils, tulips and the smaller varieties. If you want to sow seeds for biennial species, wallflowers, you need to act more swiftly, sow as soon as you can now.

I went to a garden centre on the weekend.
And they had some spring bulbs on their shelves

          Bought some Frittilaria and Erythronium

            Which Frits?

I'm mostly doing seed at the moment. Various Digitalis species, Penstemon species and Salvia species. I've also got Sesbania formosa germinating which I'm rather excited by. And despite saying never again I have some Tacca seeds sown.

            Just the common maleagris

I went to a garden centre about 1/2 hour away from me on the weekend.
Picked up a few bits of interest. Including some Hostas.
And a Hydraenga aspera "hot chocolate".

I would recommend seeking out F.camchatsensis. Seems hardy here and appears to be multiplying well too....................

                longk,

I had no intention of buying them.
                But they weren't expensive so...

The latest Jaques Amand (Living Colour) brochure was waiting for me when I got home from work.....

Me too. Just on the last few packets of Perennials that I want to get under want this year so that they are big enough plants to get planted out early next Spring and will make a show next year (whereas a Spring start, next year, will probably give me a very substandard plant in the first season)

Oh wow! I didn't realise there were so many replies. Thanks everyone, this is super helpful and interesting :) Our local garden center doesn't have anything yet, they're still flogging off the left overs from the summer. I don't want to miss a trick with planting seed or bulbs now for next year.

I have just ordered some tulips, narcissi and crocus for a bulb lasagne pot! All white. My plan is to make my garden a white garden in spring followed by tonnes of colour in late summer :D

If buying your bulbs early you get a good choice, they can be limited later, but no need to plant until October/ November.

Seed of hardy annuals, sowed now, will give a much better display next year than spring-sown. Dunno if Hardy Annuals are in your game plan though?

Lots of Yellows in Spring ... although I suppose White is doable. We don't have any yellow in the garden - except in Spring when most of it is yellow! Daffs, Forsythia, Laburnum .. and Pink from Cherries - we don't have Pink in the Summer garden either

P.S. If you are looking for somewhat more unusual bulbs for the Spring then worth looking at

                        www.angliabulbs.com

prices are usually good, as are the size & quality of the bulbs.

Their range of Daffs & Tulips etc. is limited.
