What are you reading? 2019

i dont beleive there is a thread on this i did a search but cant find one. If there is feel free to point me in the right direction and delete this one :-)

I read a lot and always like to know of other good books or authors that i dont know about so thought we could share the books we have just read.

I have just finished Tess Gerritsens - Die again. It is the latest one in her rizolli and isles series. i personally love Tess gerritsens books they are really easy to read and are always gripping, its hard to put the book down when you get to the end of the chapter

unfortunately this one was a bit dissapointing it was a good story but very short. I read it in two days but only because i stopped myself from reading it in one. it said it was 330 pages but there was a blank page at the end of most chapters and there were 40 chapters. When the chapter ended on the right page. The next left page was left blank and the new chapter was started on the right page. I felt a bit cheated that this was done to just bulk the book out.

Hopefully her next one will be better. Havent decided what to read next but i think it will be a harlan coben book.

I have just finished Bernard Cornwell's The Empty Throne, the latest in a series of fictional exploits of a Saxon Lord under King Alfred and incorporating real events.
I am now reading An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris about the French 'Spy' Dreyfus left by my son. All three of us read a lot, beats watching TV.

 

I've got two on the go at the moment. Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L.James (again...just to see if it's as horribly american as it was the first time) and 'The Gift Of A Garden' by Beverley Nichols (again) 'cos it's that or Terry Pratchett or Tom Holt for the thousandth time.....

 

Never read fifty shades of grey noisette is it as badly written as they say it is?

And strongylondon books that incorporate real events always appeal more to me it makes it far more interesting

 

I'm yet to read this but have read the rest of the series. It's difficult to fault Bernard Cornwell.

I've just finished reading The Long Ships by Frans G. Bengtsson. An old book that was published in 1954. It follows the life and adventures of a Viking called Orm and says a lot about the way of life in that era. The first few chapters were rather slow but the book opens up to be a good read. It's a long book at 481 pages.

 

I re-read The Wasp Factory by Ian Banks before christmas which is one of my favourite books.

At the moment I'm reading The Snowman by Jo Nesbo. A far better read than the Wallander books which may be down to the translation or maybe it's because there is no TV series to compare it to?

On a TV link I would recommend The Talk Of The Town by Ardal O'Hanlon (who played Father Dougal McGuire in Father Ted).

 

Your garden in wartime by CH Middleton. Really interesting to read about methods used in the war. Might try and make my plot into a wartime one.....

 

Complete with air raid shelter?

 

Definitely! Don't know if you ever watched 'Dynasty' on television, but it's the literary equivalent.....it's so appalling that you have to read / watch again to confirm that it's really as bad as it seems the first time
I'll have to unearth the Dickens set as an antidote

 

Just finished reading An Ear to the Ground by Ken Thompson, a plant ecologist. It's an interesting delve into the science of what's really going on in your garden. There are some good insights into the various relationships between all the flora and fauna in our gardens and it makes you look at some aspects of gardening from a new perspective.

Now reading Blood of Dragons by Robin Hobb. It's the final part of one of those epic fantasy fiction type series. Not everyone's cup of tea I know, but I like a little harmless escapism occasionally and Robin Hobb is a great storyteller who writes a good yarn.

 

Just finished "The Good Girl" by Mary Kubica. It's a crime/thriller novel and a real page turner. It has a really good twist and is written in a way that's different from the usual crime/thriller story. I'm just about to start Cold River Rising about a Native American woman who gets kidnapped in a foreign country and what the tribe from her reservation do to get her back. I've got loads of books lined up on my Kindle!

 

The Good Girl sounds like my type of novel, Fern4. Must get that. I've just finished the whole series of Alex Gray's books - crime/detective novels set in Glasgow. Got the last 2 Harlan Coben books to start on next. I almost exclusively read crime novels, the exception being Robert Harris and a few auto/biographies

Got loads of harlan coben to read yet but fully up to date with karin slaughter and only two left of tess gerritsen

Once harlan cobens are all read i have a few mark billinghams to read and then will have to get the rest
