I want to add some climbers to my garden to cover unattractive walls and trellices. I need them to be cheap to purchase, attractive and not grow out of control. What would you suggest. Does't need to be flowering, just have good foliage. Something I can plant now and start spreading by Summer.

If you don't mind a deciduous plant you can't go wrong with the Golden Hop. It suckers along the ground and pops up willingly, grows to approx 20 feet up, has beautiful foliage and when mature produces hops to give winter interest when the leaves have fallen. I cut mine back to the ground each March, and they are two feet up again now. To accompany the hop use a late flowering clematis that can also be cut back to the ground in mid/late spring.
If you find a big potted hop to buy you will probably be able to chop it into three or four plants.

Hydrangea anomala petiolaris (climbing hydrangea) is lovely for a North or East facing aspect - white flowers summer & is self clinging. Clematis armandii (evergreen) is fab too -white flowers spring. Rosa "Ena Harkness" - dark red & smells divine. Passiflora caerulea for south or west asppects & is evergreen in mild situations. Perennial sweetpeas (Lathyrus latifolius). You could also try growing "wall shrubs" i.e. not strictly climbers but will grow up fences & walls such as euonymous, ceanothus, and Pineapple broom (Cytissus batandieri) Pyracantha. Frementodendron californicum for a warm fence has great yellow flowers & interesting hairy foliage (but avoid if you have allergies as sheds irritant hairs). How about a fig? or Kiwi (or ornamental kiwi Actinidia kolomatika which has pink, green & white splashed foliage), or an grape (ornamental or edible). The world's your oyster really, have a look in some good gardening books, find specimens you like, check their vigour, season of interest & whether they will grow in the conditions you can provide & have fun!

    Try Morrisons supermarket

They have many clematis and a few other climbers at £1.69. Beats any garden centre.
