This bank is the spoil from a Mill race.I garden in a cottage garden style and want the same here, but I would like your views on where I should put a path up and through it and what you would expect to see as you walk the public path just behind the arch..Would you like a seat?..another arch along the length of the path[30ft]?...Ideas please
sorry, don't understand, does the public path go between the arch and the bank? and do you want to put you path straight up the bank?
I think a seat would be desirable if there is a nice view looking the other way? Slope looks just right for a nice water feature, but presumably that's not what you want in a traditional cottage garden, but what an opportunity?
Me I would wind the path to give different focal points. e.g.through the arch, wind left up the slope to the left of that grass thing (make the left corner a feature) - along the top with border and climbers against the fence so walker looks at a bed on the left, and down over the garden (you could even consider a long pergola like structure along the top - with wisteria/laburnum or even vines - like they have at Hever) , then (assuming the rails are the end of the area) wind down the slope. The bank could be turned into feature itself with either terracing and cottagy garden things, or make it a kind of scree/rockery garden
So this is your place, Pal, and there's a public right of way through it? Is that right? If so, you're thinking about members of the public looking from the path, through your arch, into your garden? Or have I got that completely wrong? I looked at this about midnight and thought I'd had too much to drink, but I'm not seeing this much better this morning!!
Ok - give me time to think!! It's been a busy weekend so far, what with grape hyacinths, and wells, - it's all go!
Remind me if I forget - BUT I have landscaped old mill race outside my back door and foot path runs allong side. It may not be what you ate thinking of (as you are much more creatively minded than the £****** that were paid to these landscape artists), but it may be of some help to spark you off - will try to remember to take some pics tomorrow if Edward the Canadian goose who is pinning me into my property allows me to escape!
Sorry Paladin I am being a bit thick here, I was just wondering where the water was, but then read again and understand the mound to be from mill race and not actually a mill race you are trying to landscape. Anyway - here is mill race landscaped with footpath, but not sure it is of any use.
 How I wish I had such a feature in my plot. Don't think I would be too concerned with the planting :D Like I said ...shoot the goose!
