Lavender is a classic, I think, and of course bulbs to provide early colour.

The most prolific species I have with my roses is GREENFLY - nothing seems to be really effective.

Other than that, Mallow has been there for years and keeps self seeding - so seems to be happy. It needs support as it reaches about 5ft and we get a fair bit of wind.

There's a picture in one of my books of brightly coloured daisy like flowers in a rose bed. It looks really good. Unfortunately it doesn't say what type of daisy like flowers they are. To my untrained eye they look like oesteospurmums (cape daisies).

    I recommend salvia microphylla.

I started growing it with my roses last year and it looks a picture when it's all in flower, like a bouquet. I've been really pleased with the results
