      Is it a cedar, it has the appearance of one but on the way out.
      I wouldn't like to guess what has gone on but it looks bad.

        Hi,

        What a shame when a tree dies like this.

        Many thanks infradig; it would be an easy one to fell because it's not on a steep site.

        Will it fall without "hanging up" in the trees behind it Drahcir; if your neighbour doesn't know how to measure the trees height this is the method I use and it's accurate;

        I dislike felling mature trees but sometimes it can't be avoided.:cry3:

        Kind regards, Colin.

        That's a sad old tree, who knows if it died first and the bark is now falling off or is the bark falling off the reason for death?

          Well they will kill whenever the chance when hungry, but surely not trees?

          Could the birds be attracted to worms boring into the tree.
          My neighbours have a half dead tree and occasionally I see wood peckers drilling into it to get at the insects in the dead wood.
