What happened to Youth Training schemes?

    At work, we're thinking of getting someone in that we can train up. He/she would be under my expert guidance:biggrin:

    They would not be the tea boy/girl, but would actually be learning relevant stuff.

    The boss has asked me to see what ideas I can come up with. I thought we could offer somebody a work placement with the real possibility of keeping them afterwards if they show promising signs of progress, but all I know of is the YTS/YT/Extra Tenner (ET) type schemes which seem to have vanished off the face of the earth.

    Any suggestions?

    I can find out what colleges are in the area and contact all those that cover IT, but other than that, I have no idea.

    Earlier this year my son tried to get an IT Apprenticeship via this company:

    They are govt appointed middle-men for arranging apprenticeships - sorting out the funding and running interviews and then placing students within industry.

    It seemed a good scheme, study and get paid whilst getting practical experience, but there were no suitable companies within commuting range for my son, so he's gone onto a full time Uni course instead.

    Sorry I don't know about any other schemes.

      Most colleges will have access to government assisted schemes.

          I am a massive fan of apprenticeships. They are, without doubt, the very best way to start a trade and education, invaluable to the individual, business and, I think, society at large.

          Call some of the local colleges and if that doesn't pan out, see what your business can create.

            I agree that, for a lot of jobs, apprenticeship is the way to go - whether governmnt assisted or not.

            Over the years I trained over 100 apprentices - and most of them still turned out OK. :)

              I would have thought contacting local colleges/schools, talking to the teachers/tutors, you would get an idea of good students with a good work ethic. Then contact job centre for information on funding if required.
