Not having much luck trying to choose a bamboo, too much conflicting information online.

Already have bamboo so am aware how it tilts when tall or even under slight wind.

But in this case, i have a small bed which is fairly exposed and I am looking for a bamboo variety that has a good strong upright nature and not too top heavy?

    Can anyone recommend a type?

    thanks

@Kayne You could have a look at Chuquea "Chilean Bamboo" as they typically seem to be stouter.

I'm not sure I understand by tilt, have you a photo @Kayne ? I have a couple of varieties one is fairly flexible the other has very strong stems.

Much as I like the look, some bamboo varieties should be banned from sale in the UK.
The worst invasive types can spread under ground and up through the cavity walls of a house. Best choose carefully!

I think you may have heard the same bamboo removal consultant on the news that I did.

So they have decided that knotweed is not the end of the world and started on bamboo
I think if you footings are a bit suspect it might happen but I can't see how it would get into a cavity on a reasonably sound building.
More likely to head for the drains I would think.

@Kayne how does the bed stand in relation to house, garage, shed, boundary?
I certainly would keep bamboo, spreading or non spreading, away from structures and boundaries.

I saw a report today on Google showing bamboo that had grown up into a house cavities walls.
            £100,000 to eradicate.
Check it out on Google :noidea:

The OP was talking about tilting rather than running, two different things.

A lot of fargesias tend to be weeping or 'bendy' as they get bigger, f. campbell is stouter....normally.
Chusquea culeou is a good shout, or pseudosasa japonica. Neither of these will uproot your house, unless it was made by one of the first two piggies:dunno:

I'd add Butyl-lined ponds to the list. A Pleioblastus pierced my UK liner in 8 places.

We have two bamboos that don't lean but just fan out as the years go by. We planted them almost 50 years ago and they're non-invasive. Unfortunately we can't remember the name after all these years. I'll see whether I can find a photo and maybe someone can identify it. :noidea:

True JWK, but the op asked for advise on which varieties to choose.
It just so happened yesterday morning that I'd read (with horror) that certain bamboos can run long distance and evidently get through house foundations (I'd guess above the footings) I'm certainly no expert, and as I had never heard of this risk before I thought I'd mention it more as a point of interest rather than direct help to the op. Having said that the report did state that the invasive specimens in question are still for sale in the UK. I'm sure the op wouldn't have ended up buying one of those, but it's something I'll be avoiding for sure in the future!

It's all good relevant information thanks @JR :blue thumb: it is just me still failing to grasp what a leaning bamboo is, I think I understand now but a picture would certainly clear it up in my mind.

These two remain upright and don't grow any higher than in the picture. Photo taken in January.
