Just been on the BBC Sport site to see the FA cup football results. The headline "Sport" was the BDO Darts Final . Now is darts a sport ? Is snooker a sport etc etc. I was told once that sport is something you can't play with your Sunday best shoes on ! How would you define sport ?

      Hi Harry,

SPORT....... an activity involving physical exertion and or skill in which an individual or team compete against each other or others for entertainment.

So, I suppose darts would be a sport because of the skill involved.

Never thought of darts as being a sport, it's just a pastime to while away the minutes between pints :)

I think sport has to be physically demanding. If it is just about skillful competition, then surely anyone who spends there life filling their face with beer and pizza while pressing a few buttons on an Xbox control pad is engaging in sport.

I've been called a good sport for putting up with bad pub manners

but, I am astonished at some of the "Olympics" sports. Next it will be the ability to walk all the way to school by one's self and everyone who does it gets a gold....

This has been a contentious matter in the courts recently with regard to other 'sports'. Mainly because of charitable status and tax implications. What it came down to in the end was the decision of Sport England (a government body). They decide what is classified as a sport and what isn't.

According to them darts is a sport - and so is Frisbee!!!

Here's the list of sports they recognise:

              http://www.sportengland.org/our-wor...al-governing-bodies/sports-that-we-recognise/

The court case was over whether Bridge is considered a sport. The English Bridge Union lost their case as it's up to Sport England to decide.

Sportaccord, which is the international body governing sports, has the World Bridge Federation and the World Chess Federation as members (joined 2000 and the World Darts Federation joined in 2007).

              http://www.sportaccord.com/about/history/

Bridge and Chess is also recognised by the International Olympic Committee as a sport although there is no category for them, whereas Darts isn't recognised. They are normally classified as mind sports and there are international tournaments.

This doesn't really answer the question though

In my world, sport is unpaid competition between two or more individuals.

For example. Watching your grandkids giving all in a game of football is sport. Watching Shrek Rooney and co. doing the same for horrendous amounts of money isn't...

A sport is a part of a plant that differs from the rest of the plant. The most notable (IMO) is Nectarines which was which was a mutation found growing on an ordinary peach and was preserved by cuttings.

Anyway, enough of my smart ass answers! I suppose that a sport is a competitive activity. But whilst I view snooker as a sport I cannot see darts as a sport. But I cannot see football as a sport either so go figure!

Sports - or mutations - do not always materialise in the form of colour differences. Sometimes a new shoot with a 'different' characteristic will be just as important. For example, most climbing roses, started life a a sport or mutation on a well known parent rose. That is how we have got 'Climbing Iceberg' and 'Climbing Ena Harkness'. Someone was observant enough to realise that the vigorous shoot sent up by the ordinary floribunda rose 'Iceberg', was not mistaken as a 'sucker' but as a very valuable vigorous shoot that enabled it to 'climb'. The shoot was then propagated by the normal process of budding, and we ended up with ;)
