    Bags of promise....:dbgrtmb:

I have a load of fruit plants waiting for a bed to be prepared, they include...70+ Strawberry, 40 Raspberry, 4 gooseberry, 4 blackcurrant, 2 Loganberry, 2 Tayberry.

I also have a Fig waiting for ground and a tray of Foxglove seedlings.

Then there is all the recycled timber I've collected this last few months that will be used for doors on my second tunnel thats still in the shed at the moment and around 30 panes of greenhouse glass (2' x 2') waiting for me to build them into a quite large cold frame.

    Bags of promise...

From the polytunnel: celeriac, overwintered celery, 3 types of lettuce, daikon, giant kohl rabi, lamb's lettuce, beetroot, swiss chard, dragon's tongue (tastes like mashed potatoes with a hint of mustard!), broccoli raab, turnip greens, baby carrots, spring onions, coriander, parsley, rocket and turnips.

Oh and next door neighbours cat. I must get the tunnel gate on today!

I have 43 Tomato plants, 1 Cue and 1 Courgette and I think 50 French Marigolds, 3/4 of the Tom's are planted in the soil which is changed every year, and just in case of plant failure I plant a few in Grow bags, The Marigolds are a pest control.

Hi Harv, I don't have any problem with the beets, I grew them last year as well without any bother. I eat a lot of beetroot (probably most days) so the ones in the tunnel give me an early supply while the outdoor ones catch up.

You 40-to-50 Tomato plant gardeners must a) like Tomatoes a lot or b) do a lot of entertaining and c) have plenty of time for preserving them!

I have progressively cut back from 18 plants in the greenhouse to 15 (same spot though, so they are just a bit further apart) and that seems to be plenty for us. None ripe yet, but I have fruit forming on the 4th truss (and given the lousy light levels this year they are rather elongated so will be at the roof with only 5 trusses formed).

It takes no time at all to freeze tomatoes, then when needed defrost (which helps peel the skin off) and drop into soups stews and sauces through the winter. I have around 30 plum tom plants in the second tunnel just for this.

Good thought. I'm not grown Plum Toms - presumably less "juice" so better suited to freezing?

Thicker flesh, less seeds and juice. I would call it "meaty".
