Grumpy old woman; miserable old git; couple of old fogies, call us what you like, but both Mr. F'smum and I hate New Years Eve with a passion - it is, to both of us, the most depressing evening of the year. We've been to parties both large and small, we've been out to restaurants, we've stayed in, we've been to friends and/or family and had friends and family come to us but nothing has managed to change the way we both feel. I, well both of us really, just cannot understand what it is about the evening of 31st December that gets people sufficiently excited to want to party [IMG] (unless it's to blot out the awfulness of it all)

There's obviously something fundamental we're missing, but we shall spend it pretty much like any other evening, just enjoying one another's company, probably moaning about the continuation of what has, up to now, been total bilge on TV and following dinner of whatever we fancy at the time, will go to bed when we're tired - anytime between 10.30 pm and 3 am, depending on how much we talk, then wake up when the whole sorry business is over.

I don't begrudge other people enjoying themselves and to those having a party, I hope you have a really great time and to everyone here, a very Happy New Year. I wish I could see the point of celebrating, but I'm afraid I just don't 'get it'.

(PS -I bet you're glad you're not related to us :heehee:)

Its to celebrate the fact that we've somehow survived yet another yet, and knowing that we've inevitably made a few blunders in the year, there is a brand new year just itching to be wrecked just hours away.

To us it's just another evening. No particular likes or dislikes for it.

When we were younger, a lot younger, it was an excuse to party through the night without the worry of having to go to work the next day. Any excuse was acceptable.

For the last 15 years, or so, it has been a good reason to depart for warmer climes to spend time exploring far away places where a lot of the time they wouldn't even know it was New Year :heehee:. Or if they did, they wouldn't be inviting us to their celebrations :loll:

This year we shall be at home relaxing with a couple of good friends. It will be a pleasant evening and I'll cook us a nice meal.

Totally agree with Fidgetsmum. We have never bothered with New Year either.

Can we join the grumpy club? We try to go away for Xmas and New Year but this year we are at home. There will be drunken kids roaming around our road, Mr PP will go to bed early. I will stay up because of the antics outside. Marmie and Fairyfeet (our two rescue cats) will be terrified out of their tiny little brains by the brainless letting off fireworks until the early hours. The only redeeming thing is that Spring is on its way!!!
PS Happy New Year to everyone and may your gardens grow with vigour!!! Also, thanks to everyone for their helpful and entertaining posts throughout the year.

It's a great time of year when you are very young, I feel. Hopefully you are still naive enough to believe that the new year might just be better than the old one and, unlike Christmas, the kind of celebrations you have in mind do not involve ancient relatives who fart a lot, drone on about the war and keep losing their teeth. I suppose they may still involve people who have forgotten who they are and end up slumped in doorways covered in something unsavoury, but in a good way, if you know what I mean. A young way. Nowadays, I still like it because we get a bank holiday for New Year's Day and OH gets another day when he doesn't have to go to work. Actually, he usually does because there's generally a disaster of some sort or other. But at least we start the day in a hopeful mood.

This is exactly how I feel about Christmas! I'm glad it's gone.

We'll be at my daughters tomorrow evening playing games on the family's 'Kinect' machine which is always good for a giggle. :heehee:

Once New Year is over the island starts to look forward to T.T. at the end of May, a bigger and better event than Christmas and New Year together, anytime! Shame it can't be all year round.:)

I always celebrate New year with my wife .... (no guests tommorow) ...

will be a BBQ tommorow afternoon (Greek souvlaki ... already have the cubes of pork and lamb marinating in olive oil, lemon juice, oregano, salt and pepper)

lots of music and lots of beer/whisky .... kids are going to sleep out parties, so just the 2 of us .... she seldom drinks, gets drunk easily, so I will take 'advantage' of her
