What is this plant?

What is the name of this house plant

Is it a variation of Bromeliads

What care does it need? Have just been given it some water (not a lot) in the central stem

Will the flower on it die away and is it best discarded then ?

Yes it is a Bromeliad check goolge for images that are the same , just keep the center stem topped up with water plus some in the pot, The flower will die once it has cut it back, the main growth will die but it should send up growths from the base.
