Can anyone identify this? It started growing in our garden last year. It reminds me of something I bought from a garden centre a few years ago, which I beleive was called Lantana or Latana, but it had different coloured flowers, grew taller, and was in a different part of the garden. I don't know where this came from.

Not sure, someone will know, I know for sure it is not Lantana as it is not hardy here( definitely wouldn't have survived this winter) and has coa*rse leaves not shiny like yours and a pungent smell of cat's wee.:D

    Hi Nim ...

The leaves are certainly not right for Lantana, yours are too smooth and the plant is too small ... unless there is a new breed I am not familiar with ... but as strongy says they do not survive outdoors in the UK .... they suffer even here in the winter ....

When did you take these photos?

My thought is one of the hardy Verbenas, many of which have multi-coloured flower heads. I've just gone out and looked at mine and the clusters are similar.

I'm almost positive it is not Purslane and it is a living nightmare here ....

    I'll keep thinking ....

Verbena came to my mind, but I've never grown any myself.

It was just the way the flowers form.

Thank you all for your replies. The pictures were taken late last summer; Septemberish I think. Possibly late August. We did have some Verbena a few yeas ago; it didn't look like that though. I've just Googled Verbena; it doesn't look like this plant either. The pictures I've posted aren't the flower in the development stage; this is it .. they don't grow and protrude any further (sorry, don't know the proper terms). I don't know how clear it is from the pictures, but each tiny flower head in the cluster looks kind of like a tiny orchid. Also not sure if it's clear in the picture, that they creep along the ground. They are really really pretty. If they come up again this year, and do well again, I could perhaps send some cuttings to someone to see what you guys make of them? (No idea how to send cuttings mind you).

Ooooo ... now that looks similar. How big is it? Hmmm .. having returned to Uncle Google, there are many types of Nemesia, yes? Most of them look kind of bushy, which this is not. It does look similar though, so it could still be that. Funny isn't it lol, not being able to identify it.

Not really funny being unable to ID a particular plant, there are so many varieties of any one particular plant.

Some are straight forward, others are more complicated, unless you actually know that plant..

If it is then there is now a hardy Nemesia, normally they are killled off by the frost, or covered in mildew.
I just cut back a Sunsatia/Nemesia today and the leaves on it are much more serrated.
it could be a Nemesia Pete but not sure.

The more I look at it the less it looks like the right ID.

I've not actually checked to see whether it has survived the winter yet. If it's there I'll take a snippet down for my mother to play with in a few weeks. I wonder if it came from her to start with actually. I'll send her a picture and see if she remembers it.

Does this have any fragrance to it when rubbed ? I have been through several books here but have not found anything like it. It reminds me of something i had in my old garden though which was full of herbs.
