I bought a pack of labels the other day, and it had a widger and dibber included - now, a dibber I am familiar with, but what on earth is a widger, what is it used for, and who on earth dreamed that up as a name?

The ones I have look exactly like these:

    FC,

A small, traditional, British implement, can be made from plastic or stainless steel.

It has a small spatula shaped end and sometimes the opposite end has a two pronged fork or a small dibber.

Invaluable tool for anyone who grows from seed or cuttings. It is used mainly for pricking out and transplanting seedlings and cuttings, can also be used to break up the top of the soil if it hardens over in the trays, making planting holes for the small seedlings in their new pots and adding fertilizer to houseplants.

Thanks landimad - I did wonder if it was something for pricking out with, especially the V-shaped end.

For all the pack was only a few quid, these might well be quite handy as I have loads of seeds on the go.

The spatula end, which I use for a bit of feed to water down when plants need a bit of TLC.
