What is this? I can't find it in any of my normal identification channels.

It is taking over the beds under the hedges in great clumps. Doesn't seem to have much of a root system as it's quite easy to pull up.

Is it a weed or am I pulling something special up?

Looks like 'London Pride' a Saxifraga .I think Saxifraga urbium perhaps someone else can help with the name .
It does like well drained sites so under your hedge would be good .

A nurseryman once recommended London Pride to me for use as a living cushion for a seat I was planning to put in my basket den I made. I told him the seat would be in permanent dappled shade, would need to be maintenance free, quick to form a mat across the whole bench, and able to take the punishment of being sat on. London Pride Saxifrage is the plant he recommended.

I never did finish that project, and unfortunately the snow laid waste to my basket den, simply crushing it flat:(

Looks like London Pride to me , Susanna. it's not a weed but can be very prolific if it's happy.
You could pull it out of the beds if you don't want it there and leave it under the hedge where other things won't grow. I find it very pretty when it flowers.
If you have any very dry patches in your garden where other things won't grow you could transplant some there - just pull it out and push it in where you want it.
Or you could put some in pots and donate to a local plant sale. Garden centres charge quite a lot for a little bit in a plant pot.

    Thanks very much.

Ours is a little darker in the leaf and slightly variegated but otherwise exactly the same as the picture above. I presume there are many different types.

Unfortunately I've pulled alot of it up but I will leave what remains. I'm sure in time it will re-colonize.
