    Is this friend or foe?

There's lots of this in my beech hedge (Fagus Sylvatica) and wondering if it's a weed or new beech?[IMG]

I'd say that's marestail. If so, definitely a foe, and very difficult to get rid of.

I had some success in curbing, and even pushing back marestail on a semi-wild bank. I would wait until the stems were about 6" long, and then remove them as far below ground as possible. And repeat, over and over, through the growing season.... (Really reluctant to use poisons, even roundup, if I can avoid it)

I'd say, at a guess that it was a thumbnail! :yahoo:

Yep, you've got marestail. A plant as old as the dinosaurs and needing a meteorite blast to get rid of it. I have heard you can crush it, leave it to stand in water, dilute the stinky result and it's a good bug deterrent.

      Cheers, Tony.
