A friend saw this aster last year in the Botanical Garden in Birmingham. At least, we think it is an old-fashioned aster, but can't find the right name. Who can help us please? Thanks!

I am not so sure it IS an Aster, though obviously it is in the same family. How big is the flower? To me, if the flower is a good size it looks like one of the many forms of Shasta Daisy, used to be Chrysanthemum, but now changed to Leucanthemum x superbum

Hi, Sis. [IMG] I looked here this morning but didn't have time to answer.

Although there is a "shaggy" Aster called Ostrich Plume (Callistephus chinensis) which I used to grow in Bucks, they are double. I too thought perhaps it is a Chrysanthemums of some sort, but one of the Dendrathemas as there are various feathery ones in that species, although it does look very like the link PeterS put up for the Shasta.

Looks like me on a bad hair day. D)

Thanks Palustris and Peter, I'm sure you have both ID'd it as the ones in that link sure look like my friends.

She was there about late June and the flower heads were almost the size of chrysanthemums. She said that they looked like mops and were stunning. I quite fancy them myself now!

Hi Sis! I didn't see you before, guess I was away too long conferring with my friend. I shall look out for some myself.

I used to have some asters years ago, in dark blues and pinks, might also have been paler colours too. Anyway, I always called them asters and the neighbour next door did too. He had plenty of luck with his but I never did. That is why I said Aster, although my friend didn't really think so.

Anyway, I'm glad they have been ID'd, they are probably something else than what I used to (try to) have.
