What makes holes like this?

    hallo,
    there are several holes like this in my garden -- dont want to dig it up in case its a beneficial beastie and i dont want to destroy his/her home any way --- just curious, karaman

      It looks like a solitary bee - best to leave it undisturbed as they obviously do good.

        It could be miner bees Karaman, I have some just outside my back door at the moment. They are harmless and shouldn't cause any problems.

          thank you JWK and Sheal --- what a relief! for a moment i thought it was moles.... bees very welcome, i wont disturb them, am about to make a bughouse for bees and other beasties this year anyway so hoping for even more.

            If it was a mole there would probably be a pile of soil above the hole. :)
