Why are you re-seeding? Did the turf die or is patchy?

I would say, topsoil, seed then fertilizer. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

In that case you would fill up the holes with soil first, then add your fertilizer then rake in the seed :thumb: How big are the holes? Rabbits are very active at the moment, digging into my garden - I hope its not them as they are quite destructive.

If the holes are around the size of golf balls, it'll be the squirrels burying nuts. I get those, I put in a little soil and close them up in a similar way as I would a pitch mark on a golf green, but I use a screwdriver.

It's definately not rabbits or squirrels,it's not worm casts,it's like bits of soil on top of the grass......

Ok so i cut the grass last sunday, put the lawn dressing down, seeded patchy areas and fertilized, was hoping i wouldn't need to cut the grass again until spring but it's grown a fair bit already, what should i do? I can't really cut it just now as the grass seed hasn't germinated yet?? Will it be ok if i leave it longer over winter? It's roughly 2.5 inches long.

It'll be absolutely fine to leave it longer over winter but you probably won't have to.

Can you cut round the seeded areas until they're established? If not and it's difficult just wait a few weeks and give the whole lawn a good going over.

I'd personally cut what I could now to keep it manageable as 2.5 inches is long for grass and will only get longer. You're certainly not doing it any harm by not cutting now though, just making it harder for later.

    Hope that helps.

Just be careful what you mow the grass with, a hover mower will work like a vacuum cleaner and suck up the grass seed if it hasn't germinated.

Ok so i took a couple of spacers off the mower so to leave it a bit longer and mowed the lawn,i have come to the conclusion the "holes" in my relatively new lawn are worm casts, there are a lot of holes now and to be honest is making a mess of my lovely new lawn! I realise worms are good for my lawn but its making the turf look bad as there are so many holes in it.... Any ideas what to do with the holes,i've seeded over them 2 weeks ago but new ones keep appearing!!

Are teh casts getting "rolled" by your mower? That has a tendancy to spread and compact them, preventing a wider area of grass from growing well. (in which case brush them, to spread them, beofre mowing or clear them up before mowing).

I suppose you could also kill the worms in your lawn (poor things! but re-homing them would be a significant project!)
