Hi all, I'm after some of your much valued advice.

I'm looking to grow some peas, as we eat them by the bucket load here. I've never grown peas before as I'm still very much new to this gardening lark, even more so, in the veg growing department.

I'd really appreciate some advice on a good pea to grow from seed, which has lots of taste and is hardy to disease.
I'd be growing them this year in long troughs, the sizes are 39" <---> long, by 7 & 1/2 inches wide, by 6 inches deep (internal depth). Hope those measurements make sense.

I'd like to start them sooner rather than later, to have a good supply in the coming months.

Can any of you reccommend a good pea to start with? I'd looked at Pea Kelvedon Wonder Seeds, from Suttons? Would that be a good one, or is there a much better one to start with?

    Thank you in advance...

Hi Joolz. I've never grown peas in a container but I think a depth of 6" is a bit small for peas - they like a good, deep, root run.
I grow Kelvedon Wonder in the ground and find it a good, reliable variety.
This year I am also growing some Avola - dwarf peas which only grow to 2'. Packet says they can be grown in a bucket so that could be an idea for you. Or grow the Kelvedon Wonder in buckets up a wigwam of canes.
Hope you get lots of lovely peas.

Kelvedon Wonder is a good choice Joolz. At 6" your troughs are a bit too shallow for peas though, they are deep rooting. If you can find anything deeper then now is a good time to sow some - try and sow a few every 3 or 4 weeks to get a succession throughout the season.

Thanks JWK, I do indeed have some deep tubs, these are the one's I'd be using.

    Large Tubs

Would they be sufficient in depth, for them to get a good root base?

Yes they look good. Just make sure you have some drainage holes in the bottom :dbgrtmb:

Yup, plenty of holes in the bases. We added a fair few more when we brought them last year. Why they thought two diddy holes would suffice a tub of that size, beats me!

I might add a few more to them when I get them ready.

I've brought the peas now, and we're hoping to get a couple more large tubs so I can stagger the growing & harvesting process. :dbgrtmb:

Thank you Alice, and JWK for your much appreciated advice. x
