Its been an extraordinarily wet and cold year, which must favour some plants and hold back others. I am sure that there are some lessons to be learn't, and it would be nice to know what did well and what did badly as a result of the weather rather than any other cause.

I have been digging up perennial Lobelia and noticed that Lobelia cardinalis 'Queen Victoria' had a horrid year: there was little bloom during the year and the plants themselves have hardly increased in size. By contrast Lobelia vedrariensis "Tania" had a brilliant year: it bloomed well and the plants all grew much larger. This is definately caused by the weather, as I have two large patches of each all in similar soil. I dig them up every winter and put them in small pots in cold frames, so on average they all start off the year the same size.

Also my Dahlias had a really poor year, and Liatris spicata just couldn't be bothered to get out of bed. But all my perennial Geraniums had a really good year, perhaps not flowering quite as well but they all grew really huge.

    Hi Peters, interesting thread..
I think everthing in my garden done really well, despite the rain. I worried about my Tropicals but they Just Loved it, The only plant that didn't survive was the Buzy Lizzie, it turned black and slimey but i only had about 6 in a pot so no bare patches in the borders :) I suppose it depends what we grow, I could imagine if anyone grew Petunia's the last 2 years they would be disappointed, so if this is because of Globalwarming I think we should be thinking about growing different Plants!! just a thought .. Dee..

With no sustained spells of warm sunny weather not much that I grow did that well really.

The bananas seemed to like the moisture but not the wind, all new leaves were shredded before properly forming.
Toms did much better than you would expect, other than that it has been a very uneventful summer, nothing doing well, but most things doing OK ish.:)

I noticed that my carnation didn't do as well as it did last year and it's only a young plant, took loads of flowers off it last year but they've not been there this year to have.

I put out alot of wild flowers, godetia and californian poppy, they all had a poor showing too this year.

Nasturtium, sweetpeas and geraniums put on a great show for me this year but then again so have the weeds.

    :)

There was not a great deal of change for our plants this year but they are all well established. Our wild bee orchids seemed to like the weather as they started earlier and had spread but the cowslips that they grow amongst weren't quite as profuse as normal.

Veggies and fruit were a different matter. The late snow killed off all the pear blossom and most of the plum blossom whilst the apples have given us the best crop ever. The runner beans enjoyed the warm late spring and were high up the canes by the start of May whereas the courgettes didn't really seem to get going properly.

Weeds and grass grew at a phenomenal rate.
