Hi Paladin, looks like they could be agapanthus, one of the broad-leaved more tender varieties. If so, they may survive the winter planted out in a sheltered, well drained spot - they do here - and then you could use the pots for something else :)

I brought four bulbs back from Madeira about five years ago and had my best show with them this summer. On the advice of the person who sold them to me, I have never changed the pot - about the same size as the ones from your donor - but feed them lavishly all through spring and summer. They flowered for about three months and still have shreds of petals left. Can I do anything productive with the black seeds left in the flower heads?

Lucky you Pal, they look very healthy.
I sow some Agapanthus seed every year for planting out in the parks, 12 of the 30 I sowed in december last year flowered in august, unusual but it can happen. They flower well if planted in the ground or in pots.:)

Hi Feathers, I brought back seeds from Madeira last October and sowed them straight away into a propagator. They all came up and are now healthy little plants, but probably won't get to flowering size for another 3 years or so.

Thanks for that info Blackthorn, I will give them a try. Can I ask what compost you used for your seeds? 02

    Hi 02, I used a multi-purpose with added sharp sand at about 4 - 1 mix.
    Good luck with them :)
