I have bought an azalea that will grow to around 1,20 cms. I want to put in in the right size pot from the start. I have a round pot that is about 40 cms high by 50/60cm, is this likely to be big enough or too big even?

I would say it is perfect, because it will grow into it, you have room round it for some smaller stuff until it gets bigger.
Don't forget you will need ericaceous compost for it.
I have just noticed the date of your post, hope I am not too late:D
I am surprised you didn't get an answer to it.
