    Hi All

Can anyone tell me what this is creeping under the fence from next door. It spreads by roots under the ground quite quickly.

      Hi @Dropmore
I think it's 'lily of the valley' (Convallaria majalis.) If happy with growing conditions, it can be quite invasive!

        Thanks Bob

I'LL try to nip it in the bud then . It's already popped up a couple of feet away in a few days.

I was going to mention that those who want to grow it usually fail! The flowers (and 'yours' is about to flower) smell gorgeous, so you may want to wait until they are over.

I’ve tried to establish Lily of the Valley in every garden I’ve had … this is the first where it’s been happy … even so it’s taken ten years to populate an area 8” x 4’ at the foot of a wall in the shady side pathway. It’s budding up nicely … I’m so looking forward to being able to pick a little bunch for the table in a few days … such a beautiful and evocative perfume, and a pretty flower.

Here in France people give it to each other on the 1st May. Years ago there were loads of road side sellers of posies, not so many now.

Have you noticed, @Busy-Lizzie, that it flowers well before 1st May nowadays? :) My first flowers were out on 1st April! It's a lovely custom, but perhaps it's time to choose a different flower
