    Hi

I am a novice gardener and I have been clearing my very overgrown garden since nov. And it is looking messier than I had hoped. I am trying to create a rose garden can anyone suggest what i can do next to make it look tidier please?

Welcome to Gardeners Corner Chimneyrosegarden. I'm sorry, I haven't much of a clue about roses but I'm sure somebody will be along this evening to help you out.

You could try posting this in the Roses section too as there are members who specialise. :)

Can I be a bit brutal please? First of all clear all the bits and pieces off the lawn and border areas and any rubbish, bin. Anything that has to stay outside you could tidy onto your patio.

The edges of the lawn against the path can be trimmed with a spade, to make a nice straight edge. You can do the same for the curved border near your patio. You'll find that will make a big difference. Then mow the lawn.

The borders I think I would clear of plants and weeds only leaving the ones that you really want. If you want to plant roses only then clear the lot and dig it over. Once this is done you will have a clearer picture of how you want it to look.

If you're still stuck after that, take more pictures and post them here and we'll take it a step further.

It looks messy because you have only just done it, when the new growth starts it will be lovely. Roses are easy, from when I used to be regularly on this site I know if you were to look up any of Woo's threads on rose care you couldn't find better or easier to follow advice.

            Hello and welcome chimneyrosegarden.

I'm afraid I don't have the answers you're looking for, but if I may make one observation, I can see baby/toddler toys in your pics. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you have a young child. That being the case, given that roses are the single most vicious biting plants I can think of (as pretty as they are), are they the best choice at this point in time I wonder.

The trouble with roses is although their thorns are no bigger or sharper than many other types, their hook shape means when they get hold of you, and you pull away, they dig deeper and really tear at your skin.

I think a garden is a place to be enjoyed. That point is far more important than the appearance of the place. When there are young kids in the house, that means sometimes young plants will get stood on or dug up and various other types of damage will be done. No point getting worked up over it. I just think its important that if a kid is lucky enough to grow up in a house with a garden, then that garden should be a place for fun and great adventures without too much risk of getting hurt. I'm not talking about nettle stings or minor scratches, if you're playing hide and seek or find the creature and you stray into a rose bush, they will draw blood and can make a bit of a mess of delicate skin.
