My tomatoes have all ripened (in fact, I have let them get a little over-ripe) so I now have a big bowl of tomatoes to do something with.

I was initially going to make a tomato sauce from them (to use as a base for curry or casserole or similar), simply by skinning them, and adding them to gently fried onion and garlic and simmering for a wee while - - however, I thought I'd ask for some alternative suggestions before I get going?

Traditionally I suppose you could make a chutney; I've just made one with the last of my ripened toms, home grown apples and onions plus sultanas and some spices and vinegar. Its pretty good if I do say myself :heehee::biggrin:

Turn into tomato soup, I usually oil a tray(olive) put tomatoes on tray, season with cracked pepper and salt flakes, and bake until nicely browned and soft, meanwhile soft fry onions, when tomatoes done combine with onions. Whizz until smooth, add a little cream, some shredded basil. You could freeze.:stirpot:

I made chutney with the green toms, so more might be too much? Tomato soup is a good idea - although, I must confess that Heinz tomato soup is one of my lifelong guilty pleasures :oopss:

Yuk, I don't know why, but when I have opened a tin for my Oh, just the smell puts me off. :eeew: I have made my own tomato puree before, but it is time consuming. I have made bottled pasta sauce, :stirpot: what about pickled tomatoes?

Never considered for a second that they could be pickled - struggling to think what I would use them for too?

A tomato risotto might be nice. Roasted tomatoes sprinkled with a little balsamic vinegar, garlic and parsley are also utterly delicious. Or just eat home-grown tomato salad one more time before the winter sets in? If they're big, why not stuff them? Seems a shame to waste home-growns on a dish that doesn't showcase fresh toms.

For soup lovers, if you simmer up a tin of tomatoes with olive oil, herbs, garlic, optional cream and a bit of veg stock (Marigold) for a few minutes then whizz it with a handheld blender you will get a healthy soup for half the price of Heinz and infinitely more delicious.

Heinz was mine too until I made my own

          2lb red toms (skinned)
          1ltr veg stock
          1 Medium onion
          simmer 20 mins
          Whiz in whizer machine
Put in pan and add 125ml of milk with 1oz of cornflower, bring to the boil simmer five mins
Add one level teaspoon of sugar
          Heinz eat yer heart out
