I use woodshavings in the hen house and wonder if I can dig the woodshavings and poo straight into the veggie plot or should I put them in the compost ( which is never very active)or in a new chicken compost bin to breakdown first ?

I would pile them to rot down separately Louise. Chicken poo will burn the roots when fresh.

Its high in Nitrogen, which will help rot down the shavings, which would otherwise rob nitrogen when dug in. It'll be good stuff when rotted.

I use woodshavings in my henhouse Louise, whenever I muck out they are added to the compost heap.
Chicken poo is a good compost activator, so long as there's a reasonable amount of green material in the mix too, you'll probably find it actually speeds up the composting process slightly.

I actually put the first lot in the compost cause I didn't know what else to do with it. But despite moving the compost around the garden into hotter spots, I just can't make it breakdown. I am sure that they will produce enough muck to put some in the compost heap too.

        Hi Louise

I have the same 'problem' 13 ex-bats need a lot of sawdust and produce a lot of poop. They have started roosting out of the coop at night (why??) so I have been collecting their poop and throwing it into a newly started composter. I do have a lot of woodshavings as well so I am expecting it to take a while to break down but when it does hopefully have some fairly potent compost!!
