John innes no 2 mabye be 1 (dont want it over rich plants growth will be too soft) and add lots of xtra grit, when planting up I would sugest if the plants in pots are growing in multipurpose compost to wash it off in a bucket of water to remove all the compost then plant.

I know this sounds drastic but alpines hate the winter wet that lingers around the roots and that is what the multipurpose will do as it holds so much water, I learnt this one off my brother who worked at Kew Gardens and that was common practice with all the alpines they grew , and losses over winter were cut down by 90% because of this method

      Thankyou very much Spruce .

I am so looking forward to planting out with alpines but also know I need to work at filling with correct compost before the pretty planting .

I shall make a blog with before and after photos .

Spruce stayed dry long enough for me to work at filling with grit just to get final compost and then to dig in .
