What Were Your Favourite Books As A Child, And Do You Think They Have Guided you In Some Way In Your Walk Of Life.?.:dunno:..

    I Have had Two.:blue thumb:.

My first favourite ,which I have read several times, was Kidnapped ,by Robert Louis Stevenson .:blue thumb:.
I found the story so Compelling and so well written and engrossing that once I started to read I could not leave the book down, which annoyed my Mum, Somewhat .

My Second was a Childhood favourite,Treasure Island, Again by R.L.Stevenson.
This was another Compelling Book, the story line, the characters descriptions were so Vivid ,I could picture them in my mind so strongly .

These Books ,I Think , have had a guide in my life, I joined the Sea Cadets, then I joined the Navy at 16 years young, which annoyed my Mum..

Most Enid Blyton books, but the absolute favourite which I still own was the Enid Blyton book of the Year. It is divided by week and has stories puzzles poems and things to do relevant to the time of year. Would have to say it helped generate a love of nature and being outside which has never left me.

I ordered a book only yesterday through "Amazon" ,,"Finn the wolfhound" first printed in 1906ish Major A.E.Dawson, looked at the sequel as well "Jan son of finn", but way too expensive for that, which is responsible for my lifelong yearning for an Irish Wolfhound.

This is always a difficult question . There were many books that I enjoyed as a kid but did they influence my life? I don't know!

The Robert Louis Stevenson books were read and enjoyed but when we were kids everyone was given 'The Classics' to read.

Trying to remember which books I got hold of for myself is difficult but I do remember wanting to read the 'Alice' books, the books by Frederick Marryat (Mr Midshipman Easy etc) - and particularly, 'The Man Who Counted' by Malba Tahan. This particular book had sufficient influence on my thinking for me to, later in life, buy 'The Tractenberg Speed System of Basic Mathematics' - sad, I know! :heehee:

Ever since I started reading properly (aged 8) I've read between 2 and 8 books per week.

Trying to remember back to the early days:-
Authors - (in no particular order) Edgar Wallace, Henry Treece, Geoffrey Trease, Leslie Charteris, Bruce and Roderic Graeme, H G Wells, G K Chesterton, Isaac Asimov, Jules Verne, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jack London, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert A Heinlein, Arthur C Clarke, Frederik Pohl, Poul Anderson, Eric Frank Russell and lots more!!!!

I loved the Just William books! It was only recently that I discovered Richmal Crompton was female.

Written in such a middle class background - I think I'll retire to the drawing room now!

I loved all the stories of E. Nesbit, I found her writings a compelling read & couldn't put the books down... I think 5 Children & It was my favourite of them all..

Kenneth Graham Wind in the Willows & The Riverbank, real stories for the imagination... :snork:

The Children of the New Forest - Frederick Marryat.. We lived in the New Forest when I was a kid & we would almost relive the story in a strange way in our games there....

Arthur Ransome Swallows & Amazons, this I think cemented my love of the outdoors..!!

Basically the classics influenced my reading & stretched my imagination, gave me a love of the outdoors I think.. I could list a whole string of books & authers, but I think these were my favourites.. :yay:

We didn't own many books but I was allowed to borrow books from my nannies "cupboard" - I absolutey loved Enid Blyton and escaped into the adventures they always had.

Enid Blyton, especially the school stories. Bet I'd be cringing if I read them now. They are fairly poor literature in retrospect but I adored them then.
As a teenager I moved on to Tolkien and CS Lewis.

I really enjoyed the 'LadyBird' series of children's books, and I'm pleased that some of the series have now been brought up to date:

I was lucky with books as the public library was directly opposite the end of our road. I just had to walk to the end and then cross six lanes of traffic! Either my parents had confidence in my roadcraft or they were trying to get rid of me! :heehee:
