What would be suitable?

Can anyone recommend a climbing or rambler rose for me?

I hope to grow it under some very old sparse trees and up a fence.

Not sure which direction the fence is (ie: north facing etc) but it gets sun until about 3pm in the afternoon after which it is in shade..we get quite a lot of wind (although the rose would tend to get the wind side on rather than head on) and live in an area which is pretty harsh in the winter (next to the pentlands) so it needs to be very hardy.

The soil is poor as there are a lot of tree roots and I think it contains a fair amount of clay.

If possible I would like something red and heavily scented, but anything will do.

I have been looking at *Tess of D'Urbervilles* but as a complete novice I have no idea if this would be ok?

That has been a fab, fab help thank you - I looked at all the roses you mentioned in the garden centre yesterday but wanted to wait til I had some more advice, thank you!

Can I ask one more thing?

Do these roses you mentioned have a nice fragrance too? lightly or strongly scented?

I'm hoping to get them to grow and cover the fence somewhat (the sink attatched to the fence will be a bird bath when I get it sorted - this is going to be our wildlife corner! - bee box, bird feeders, birdbath etc..we get a lot of birds, have even had woodpeckers at our feeders!).

Thanks WOO (lovely name btw ), I really appreciate all your advice.

This is the first garden I've had where I've actually been allowed to do anything with it and it's quite exciting..and I guess a bit hit and miss too!

As you say I think I will pick the one I like and see how it goes..have been having another look at them all and there doesn't seem to be much difference between them in suitability, so will just be brave and go for it!
