I've just dug over my small front garden and installed two 1m square raised beds. It's a South-East facing garden which gets sun for a good portion of the day. My question: if you had these new beds to play with what would you grow? I'm looking for something which will show results this year and be colourful but low maintenance. All suggestions welcome :-)
I'd personally get some structure in there to give year round interest- some grasses and ground cover such as ajuga. Then dot some bulbs through- tulips, daffodils and snowdrops. For summer colour, coreopsis, verbena, lavender, poppies...whatever takes your fancy.
Well I have got a couple of 1m2 raised beds. In the past I've grown cornflowers, dahlias, marigolds and snaps in them. I decided to put some perennials in one of them last year. I have linaria and salvia in there now plus lots of bulbs - iris reticulata, dwarf daffs and crocus.
If you want low maintence then hebes are always good They wont grow too large and they are evergreen and they flower Plus you can get them with pink leaves, variegated bright green leaves, dark green and dark purply green leaves So you get loads of colour to play with. Iwould then agree with darkest minnow to save on weeding get a ground cover of ajuga reptans and than add in bulbs as well so add spring bulbs and summer bulbs so you have constant interest and get ones that are different heights as well
Lots of good ideas! I like the idea of filling them with annuals this year and trying a combination of perennials after that. Exciting to have a blank canvas! Thanks for your contributions [emoji1]
