To my tree! please help. It did the same thing last summer, appears to be burnt to a crisp. I do water it, and feed it, although it doesnt look like it, i know. After winter, when the new buds start to grow the tree looks really healthy and the it starts to look like it does now. What am i doing wrong [IMG]

I'd love it also if someone could identify it for me. [IMG]

Yuk ... frost damage? Loeaves look familiar but it's hard to tell in its current sad state.

I'm sure there a good plant spotter out there who will know what it is. Do you know how old it is?

Is it growing in sun or shade? If it isn't sun scorch then it could be a virus disease - especially as it has done the same thing two years running. Can you eliminate physical problems? ie is it frost damage? Too wet or too dry? Too hot or too cold? Is it pot bound or in the garden? Is the soil poisoned with weed killer?

If none of those, then I would say its either meant to be like that or its diseased. If it's meant to be like that 'cos it's a curly leaved wotsit, then the leaves should stay on the tree until the autumn. If they curl and then drop its likely to be diseased and should be burned. :(

Leaves look as if it might be a maple, which can suffer from wind or sun. Are the leaves dried out or just curled up?

It looks a bit "sick a more" like to me as well Liz.
You say you water and feed it TPOS, is it in a pot??
If it is a sycamore type maple, then it needs lots of space, I would think. [IMG]

Yep, it's in a pot and gets regularly fed and watered. Like i said it's never been right when it comes to summer. I think it's the sun personally but im no expert on trees, never grown one before.
As for the leaves, they are dry and crispy, but the tree itself is producing new shoots? weird ey?The leaves look very unhealthy and i dont think that this tree is meant to look this way.

Please help, it would really upset me if i had to burn it like Hornbeam suggested (if diseased)

I am going to stick my neck out and say its a sun scorched Acer pseudoplatanus 'Brilliantisimum' . I have one which does a similar thing but is ground planted and copes much better. Does it open its leaves a salmon pinky colour? These also suffer aphid infestation. Definately a maple though. How well rooted is it in it pot does the water run straight out, if so the soil/compost may have dehydrated to the point at which it can't rehydrate. Worth repotting in this case with good quality compost mix and some chicken pellets. Ultimatley trees of this potential size need to go in the ground :D Not wishing to contradict Hornbeam but I would be amazed if it is so serve to require burning.

    Yey! thank you BM!
i just wanted someone to confirm that i won't have to burn the poor thing.that would break my heart.
I too totally agree with the sun scorch thingy, the problem i have though is that my garden is in full sun and i am unable to put it any shade, as there isn't any!!

There isn't any infestation though, that's one good thing at least and yes the leaves are a Salmony colour at first, that's when it all goes wrong :(
    What to do ???

P.S Thank you for identifying her BM... [IMG]

Definitely some form of acer, not just from leaf shape, but also it has opposite leaves. Prob a sycamore! I presume it's in a container, PoS? If so, it prob needs more soil, bigger pot, and plenty of water (as well as good drainage - quite a balancing act!)
    Have fun!

If it is sun scorch and you can't supply any shade it won't thrive. As BM says check the condition of the roots, if the compost is compacted or you have any nasties in the pot this won't help. Have you a parasol or anything you could use for shade, even another plant nearby might improve things!

I watched a chelsea excert one year by an expert on Jap maples who said maples can tollerate sun as long as there is enough moisture at their roots. It might be worth standing the pot in a tray with water for super sunny days. Do the leaves open in the way I described, pinky?
