I do hope people have not given up on October. Whilst this has not been a good year, there is still quite a bit of colour in the garden. Asters and Chrysanthemums should be looking good now. And there are a lot of Salvias that flower late, and other perennials such as Sedum, Eupatorium, Penstemon, Verbena etc.

Giant form of Salvia splendens - stands about four foot high.

Another giant Salvia splendens - again about four foot high. In the background - purple Eupatorium, and blue Aster 'Little Carlow' which is quite spectacular.

Salvia atrocyanea with its prominent green calcyx

And Salvia involucrata, which must be one of the weirdest looking flowers. Other long flowering Salvias to have done well are S. 'Mystic Spires, and S. coccinea, which started to flower indoors in January (but I cut the first flowers off) and is still in flower now.

They are really lovely, Peter, the pink S splendens in particular. Mine are all having a rest at the moment waiting for the rain but your S 'Mystic Spires' has a few new stems developing. I have the S guarantica out now and two of my three rootings have taken, so fingers crossed.

Nice pics Pal - but what are they? - I assume the top one is a Nerine Lily, and do you know the variety of the bottom Aster?

Great to see such wonderful colours at this time of year.
I must do something with my little plot to improve the view in October next year.
Looks like a bomb has hit it at the moment.
