Today, I saw a nasturtium thriving in my garden. It looks like it has at least a couple of months worth of growth on it.

I spread some Virginia Stock seed around shrubs on the front lawn last year . A couple of these have flowered all through winter, pretty little flowers. Hopefully we are past winters worst now although we can still have a snow storm thrown at us in March.
Yesterday was the first day of meteorological spring , in my book spring starts on the 21st of March.

Spring definitely starts March 1st, otherwise we'd have to wait till June 21st for summer to begin. and that can't be right.

I found a few nasturtiums growing away under the thieves where they were growing last year - presumably self seeded. I'm not intentionally growing them this year after last year's disaster with caterpillars and aphids, but if a couple appear off their own back, fair play to them :blue thumb:

True, but it shouldn't be spring enough for nasturtium yet.

If the place was mine and not rented, I would have them hauled out and incinerated in a heartbeat.

of all the nasturtiums we had last year somehow one tough cookie managed to survive the winter, it looks like its been dragged through a hedge backwards (half a dozen times) but hey it alive ain't it. pity they all couldn't be that hardy

I'm trying to breed a hardy one. Every year, I get survivors later and later into winter. I've got one this year but I think winter was unusually mild, so I don't think I've quite achieved it yet, but each year I collect the seeds from the toughest ones.

I can't help but wonder though, if I ever achieve it, if I'll be creating a monster. I suspect nasturtium could become invasive if it wasn't for that one constant, winter annihilation, that keeps it under control.
