This plant is nearly 60 years old and used to be my Nan's - what is it?? And why do the newer leaves keep going yellow and falling off? Other than that it seems to be in good health.

Aye.. it's Fatsia Japonica... and if that's 60 years old, it's a bonsai

Wouldn't it stay that small in such a small pot anyway, I know they are huge when they are in the ground.

I dunno if it's a Bonsai, I presume because it's been in a pot for sixty years (not the same one, it got an upgrade a few years ago :lollol: )it just stayed that size? There's one in a garden near me that's absolute huge.

Why not put it in a large half barrel and let it go mad.

There's a Japanese Maple we have which is getting huge, the plan is to give the Fatsia it's old pot and let it have a bit more space. I presume the yellowing is a soil fertility problem? My Nan had it for donkeys years and it never had that problem.

I don't know about that-I really don't have a clue about tropical plants, very much a cottage style gardener. But it stands to reason that it will have some issues with deficiencies because of how long it's been in the small pot-I should imagine it will be happy as a pig in the proverbial with fresh compost and more leg room.

Dee knows about tropical plants, I'm sure she will pop in soon and give some pointers.
