I've had this for ages and am not 100% sure what it is. I have got a silver birch tree in a pot whichever I have had for about 8 years which really needs to go in the ground now. My only option is putting it where this plant is. It is growing strangely because it was, until recently, right up close and personal to a conifer. If I was to cut it back really hard now, do you think it would recover?
It has flowered in the past: clusters of white/pink flowers

That looks to me like Photinia davidiana ,a mottled variety such as palette.

I think it would benefit from a good pruning to shape it, no reason why it doesn't survive.

I wouldn't plant a silver birch unless you want a medium sized/ largish tree.
They grow fast and tend to not look good if pruned.

So if I prune the photonics, can I take most of the growth off? I sort of like the face that it is turning into a small tree... (it's a shrub, right?) . In the summer, I have perennials that grow right up to where the foliage starts. Thanks for the advice. I'll cut it as we enter March. :-))
